Mancini – Result was important

City suffered a 1-0 reverse at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening and Mancini held his hands up for his role in the Premier League leaders’ setback.

However, City restored their three-point lead over local rivals Manchester United in the table following a 3-0 home success over Fulham on Saturday.

A Sergio Aguero penalty, Chris Baird own goal and Edin Dzeko finish secured the points and satisfied Mancini following an indifferent last month.

Fantastic

“The players were fantastic and played very well. It was not easy as Fulham are a good team,” the City manager told ESPN.

“This is a very important result after one defeat. We need to fight against the top teams and we need to win.

“There are some difficult moments in the season and January for us was so-so. Hopefully now we can continue to win the next game.”

Mancini also played down an injury to midfielder Samir Nasri after the France international was replaced by James Milner early in the second half.

He added: “Samir Nasri had a small problem and in the next few days we can see how he is.”

Blues and Saints fire blanks

February 4 2012  Categorized Under: 02 Championship  Add Comment

Birmingham and Southampton settled for a point apiece as they both fired blanks in a 0-0 draw amid atrocious conditions at St Andrew’s.

Snow and wind hampered the eagerly-anticipated encounter, with the largely uninspiring stalemate leaving second-placed Saints four points adrift of npower Championship leaders West Ham and Blues, in fifth, five points off the automatic promotion places with a game in hand.

Guirane N’Daw’s early header proved the closest chance of a first half in which Birmingham started strongly but the visitors went on to dominate.

Marlon King forced a super save at the start of the second period from Kelvin Davis, who produced another solid stop to keep out N’Daw soon after and deny a City side who went on to shade proceedings.

Saints failed to force a single stop from Boaz Myhill at the other end and survived the 83rd-minute dismissal of defender Danny Fox for a second bookable offence, but they will highly value the point despite now having won just two of their last 10 league games after a barnstorming start.

Blues, who remain unbeaten in the league at St Andrew’s this term, saw their six-match winning sequence come to an end but are unbeaten in 11.

Nikola Zigic failed a fitness test on the knee injury sustained in the process of bagging his fourth goal in Tuesday’s 4-1 triumph at Leeds, fit-again top scorer King coming in as a suitable replacement as one of three changes.

Birmingham started in the ascendancy and no-nonsense midfielder N’Daw, back in the fold after his African Nations Cup campaign was brought to a premature end with Senegal, headed narrowly wide after eight minutes.

The home side certainly started the brighter but Saints boss Nigel Adkins, who named an unchanged line-up, adapted his side’s shape to add an extra man in midfield and the visitors gained a foothold on the encounter.

Five corners highlighted their new-found dominance but City stopper Myhill, likewise counterpart Davis, was still to make a save as the half-hour mark passed.

Southampton continued to boss matters over the closing stages of the first half but neither side had created much in the final third.

That changed within 38 seconds of the restart as David Murphy burst down the left and found King, whose strike was well palmed around a post by Davis.

Saints’ recent signing Billy Sharp was introduced for his debut just minutes into the second half, but it was Davis who was soon at the centre of matters once again as he saved from N’Daw.

Myhill was still to make a stop as Saints failed to capitalise on a defensive mix-up by the hosts with 25 minutes remaining.

The closing stages were largely uneventful until Fox was shown a second yellow for a foul on Chris Burke with seven minutes remaining.

Yet Chris Hughton’s side were unable to make their numerical advantage count.

Mowbray happy to grab point

February 4 2012  Categorized Under: 02 Championship  Add Comment

The game finished 0-0 but Palace had the best of chances, with 22 shots on goal during the game at the Riverside.

Boro were missing Barry Robson and Scott McDonald through injury and saw midfielder Faris Haroun limp off after just seven minutes, and Mowbray was pleased his makeshift team got a point.

“We are down to the bare bones,” said Mowbray after his side recorded a third successive draw. “I think we are just glad to get a point.

“It has been a difficult week for us. We only had four in training on Thursday and that makes it difficult to get the strong team out.

“We had a few players out there that perhaps in normal circumstances wouldn’t have played but that’s football and you have to get on with it.

“But that said, we did well. I’m proud of them. We kept digging in, we stayed in the game and we got a clean sheet.

“I understand the frustration of the supporters because we didn’t create much, but Palace are a good side and if we had attacked them today they would have picked us off.”

Freedman felt that his Palace side had the edge and should have taken all three points which would have moved him into the top half of the table. Despite this he was keen to take the positives from the performance.

“I can understand why people think we should have got the three points, ” he said.

“We outplayed them at times and acquitted ourselves well. Performance wise, we played well, although you live or die by your results in this game.

“But I take heart because if we play like that then we will win more than we lose.

“I don’t think the conditions we really a factor. When you play football in this country then you learn how to deal with these conditions.”

McCoist not dwelling on Jelavic

February 4 2012  Categorized Under: 05 Scottish Premier  Add Comment

The Croatian striker sealed a reported £5.5million move to Everton on transfer deadline day, with the Scottish champions unable to recruit a replacement before the window closed.

However, McCoist does not want to dwell on the past and is adamant that negativity is not an option as Rangers push ahead with trying to win a domestic double.

He said: “Selling your main striker and top goalscorer is not ideal, but it’s a fact of life that we have to face up to. I’m not going to be negative at all.

“We played Motherwell and beat them 3-0 at home and Nikica didn’t play. We played very well against Hibs, and won 4-0 at home, and Nikica didn’t play in that game either.

“I’m not saying for a minute that I wouldn’t rather have him in the team but what I am saying is we can score goals.

“Rangers will always create chances, we will always score goals, and that’s what we have to keep doing.”

Rallying call

With Jelavic’s departure adding to the loss of other key personnel through injury, McCoist believes now is the time for youngsters and fringe players to shine.

He said: “It’s an opportunity for boys on the fringe. If they do get an opportunity, they must grab it.

“Now is not a bad time to be a young lad at Rangers because circumstances dictate that, if you’re good enough, you will be given a chance.

“That’s the case, not just with the young lads, but with some of the fringe players as well.

“If they do get an opportunity, I would urge them to grab it.”

Next up for Rangers is Sunday’s fifth-round Scottish Cup tie against Dundee United and McCoist issued a rallying call for the entire club to pull together ahead of the clash at Ibrox.

He said: “What we need now is unity – we really need unity from the players, fans, all the staff and everybody involved with the football club.

“It’s common knowledge that we are in financial trouble with the possibility of the tax case as well. Everybody knows that.

“What we don’t need is doom and gloom and everybody walking about with their faces tripping them.

“We have to be positive and we have to believe. We have to all head in the one direction – and that’s forward.

“As manager of the club, that’s what I’ll be doing.”
